Five common types of suspension systems

Date: 2024-10-09

The five common types of suspension systems are: MacPherson independent suspension, double wishbone independent suspension, single longitudinal arm torsion bar beam semi independent suspension, link strut independent suspension, and multi link independent suspension.

McPherson suspension is the most widely used suspension system, mainly composed of A-type fork arms and damping mechanisms. The fork arm is responsible for connecting the wheels and bearing the lateral and longitudinal forces at the lower end of the wheels. The damping mechanism is responsible for connecting the vehicle body and the fork arm. In addition to its damping function, it also needs to support the vehicle body and withstand the lateral force at the upper end of the wheels.

Double wishbone suspension, which adds a fork arm to the MacPherson suspension. The fork arm on the upper part of the wheel is connected to the vehicle body and is responsible for bearing the lateral and longitudinal forces of the wheel, while the damping mechanism focuses on supporting the vehicle body and damping function. This structure makes the suspension system more stable when subjected to road impacts.

The design feature of torsion beam suspension is that the two wheels are not directly connected by a hard shaft, but are connected by a torsion beam. A torsion beam can twist within a certain range, but when one wheel encounters an uneven road surface, the torsion beam will interfere with the other wheel to some extent. Therefore, torsion beam suspension is considered a semi independent suspension.

The multi link suspension system connects the wheels to the body through a series of links. Compared to ordinary suspensions, multi link suspensions have a larger number of links, and suspensions with three or more links are usually called multi link suspensions. At present, the mainstream number of connecting rods in the market is four or five. Among them, the front suspension usually adopts a three link or four link independent suspension, while the rear suspension is mostly a four link or five link suspension. The image is from the internet.
